Interesting structure The crucible Essay Example

Interesting structure The crucible Paper The crucible has a very interesting structure, as in it doesnt follow many of the usual rules of play writing and uses it to maximum effect. The play consists of four acts and no scenes to separate them. This is unusual for a play write to do because it limits the acts location two one place, meaning that the story can not develop in a different place or time which can limit what someone can do with the plot The whole of the play is a subtext for what was going on at the time in 1940s America. To more precise what was happening with the red scare and general Joseph McCarthy. General McCarthy was behind the fight against communism within America. In the end he decided to start broadcasting to America a list of communists living in America at the time. Of course no such list existed and it was obviously just the names of random people living America that had nothing to do with communism in any way what so ever. This however caused mass hysteria and turned an entire nation against itself and pitted friends and neighbours against each other as everyone hunted for the communists like a mad witch hunt. Arthur Miller was using the subtext to show how obsurd the idea of mass hysteria based on a lie really was. The main thing that distinguishes the plays structure from others is the way in which it ends on an anti climax. As we can see in the graph the first three acts build up to a gigantic climax. But then suddenly the audience is left with a very short and depressing act four in which nothing much happens in terms of climax. On might interpret this as the play wrights We will write a custom essay sample on Interesting structure The crucible specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Interesting structure The crucible specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Interesting structure The crucible specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer way of getting across his message about McCarthyism. If people were left with a happy ending the audience may not have been so shocked by the play that it would make them think because everything turned out ok in the end and wouldnt have communicated the shocking truth about McCarthyism at the time. I believe that having the play leave on an anticlimax and pretty much on a down communicates the views a lot clearer During The Crucible pace is used as a technique to creating tension. Throughout Act 1, the action is immediate and there is a constant flow of different people being introduced. By placing this within a small room, Miller gives the feeling of the characters being suffocated and a lack of privacy in the village. By using this with Act 2 (for the first half there is only Elizabeth and John), Miller is able to create tension through the amount of space in the set, in comparison to the previous act, and through a slower dialogue. Miller structures the play using prevalent techniques. There is a clear exposition at the beginning of Act 1, although it occurred off scene, the girls dance in the forest. The different themes are developed and the use of the rising of action through the accusations helps the plot to grow up to a gigantic climax when John Proctor is accused at the end of Act 3. The falling action and denouement is the actual execution where John Proctor upholds his innocence and goes to the gallows at the end of Act 4. Miller uses these techniques to help create conflict to arouse the interest of the audience and an easy structure for the audience to follow. Arthur Miller uses inserted passages within the text in which he comments on the background of the story or the characters which helps the audience to get a deeper insight into the characters so they can be related to. For example, The backgrounds to Thomas Putnam makes his actions seem more horrendous which ultimately the final result of the play seem more brutal.

Animals and Fertilized Embryo Transfer essays

Animals and Fertilized Embryo Transfer essays Embryo transfer is the process of taking fertilized embryos from one animal and inserting them into another. This is very useful today in cattle because now it is economically feasible and it allows the producer a greater number of offspring from one cow with desirable traits. The process normally starts by artificially inseminating the cow. Exactly seven days later, the uterus is flushed, and the embryos and ova. Next, the embryos will be isolated. The embryos are then inserted into the recipient cow. Artificially inseminating the cow is the preferred way to fertilize the eggs in the donor cow. The cow should be inseminated at least three times at intervals of twelve hours, to insure fertilization. In preparation for AI, a shot of FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) should be given to the cow to super-ovulate her. This causes more eggs to drop from the ovaries, allowing more embryos. Seven days after the cow is inseminated the third time, her uterus should be flushed. Before flushing the cow, her posterior should be cleaned up as much as possible. After this is complete, an instrument known as the "introducer" is inserted into the vagina. The instrument is much like a long syringe with a plunger going through the center. The vet then will push his hand through the anus and guide the introducer along the cervix. The instrument is pushed through the cervix and into the uterus. Once it reaches the uterus, the plunger is pulled out, and a catheter is inserted into the uterus, against the uterine horn, through the center of the introducer. The "cuff," a small balloon type object, is inflated in the cow's uterus, and a sodium based phosphate is released for lubrication. It is then pumped back through the introducer, and filtered by an embryo filter. The liquid caught by the filter is then examined to determine the number of good embryos. At this stage, the sex can even be determined. They are graded, then placed in straws or frozen for l...

Browning Peal Essay

This is because they represent natural beauty that has been created by God, which compliments the woman Browning is talking about because it shows his feelings on how he believes they don’t have to try to be beautiful. Roses also represent love and passion, the colour red is an intimate colour that represents seduction and sometimes danger as seen in ‘Of Mice and Men’ where Curley’s wife is referred to as having â€Å"full rouged lips† and â€Å"red fingernails†. The thorns on roses continues this theme of potential risk, because the simple idea of men picking roses for women could injure the man due to the thorns on the stem, this could represent how men have to fight past the hard things in love to get to the beauty or the woman. In ‘Women and Roses’, Browning also uses roses as a representation of the stages through a woman’s life going into womanhood and how she grows from a young shoot full of promise to something incredibly beautiful and natural and eventually to an old and wilted flower, â€Å"bees pass it unimpeached†. The poem is about finding perfect love with a woman, which is represented as finding a rose with no thorns, thorns being the trouble in a relationship or a woman. Browning wrote ‘Prospice’ after his beloved wife, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, died in 1861. The poem shows Browning’s beliefs on death and how he feels that he will once again be reunited with his love in the afterlife. The title ‘Prospice’ can be translated as ‘look forward’, and in this poem, published in 1864, Browning is most likely looking forward to death, when he expects ‘I will clasp thee again’, meaning he will be with Elizabeth once more. Such optimism seems to contrast noticeably with the religious doubt or searching of many Victorian writers. But Browning does not claim that there is anything easy about facing death, instead he shows one way of coping. He gives the ‘Arch Fear’, death, a ‘visible form’ so that he can imagine taking him on in one last fight to show that he will not be taken easily, ‘Barriers’ and ‘guerdon’ suggest a tournament took place. In ‘A Woman’s Last Word’ Browning uses Roman numerals to show the breaking down of a omplex subject such as a woman’s feelings after an argument. By doing this it makes it easier for the reader to follow and distinguish the different stages of feelings the character goes through and also shows the changes in direction of her attitude until she reaches submission towards her love. This is a good technique used as he wrote the poem from a woman’s point of view and has gone into a lot of detail on how she feels and reacts to the argument. What are important factors accounting for early human mobility Essay

What are important factors accounting for early human mobility - Essay Example What are important factors accounting for early human mobility? Eurasia is the collective history of distinct peripheral coastal areas that share major contribution in human development on the grounds of distinct trade routes that interconnects diversified continental masses. The various cultural, social and tradition features of these distinct regions were similar in nature because of the regular migration of people around the board and regular intersection with trading activities. Precisely, the even development on the same pace at the distant regions in religious, technological and philosophical aspects can be regarded the uniform feature of the early Eurasian civilizations. Since ancient times China possess features that add to the strength of the country in attaining global recognition. The first and the foremost point that worth to be mentioned is the strong security (land and maritime) with rapid development of technology because of overwhelming political unity of the place that strengthened the overseas exploration ability of the region. The steady advancement in agricultural and commercial with a strong maritime technology and policy can be regarded as the main characteristics that lead the foundation of global leadership in support of the region. The classical period is the era between 1000 BCE- 500 CE. The Roman Empire in this era got rid of Triumverate when Octavius (Augustus) Caesar defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatara. On the onset of the first Empire of Rome Octavius was given the name of Augustus or the revered.

Suicide Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Suicide - Essay Example As the author reveals, the woman is apparently tormented by her past. She feels completely shattered between her two previous husbands in Chicago, which is outside her native home in the north. She appears embittered about â€Å"lost beauty.†The woman lives in abject poverty, endures racial discrimination, suffers from mental illness, and feels abandoned. She is also depressed and lonely. The poem ‘Suicide Note’ on the other hand is a representation of the disappointments that a girl faces in her life, the poem suggests that the suicide note is written while the girl is planning to commit a suicide, she expresses her disappointments, failures, struggles and hardships, she gives justifications for her act that she was unable to fight with the world and she wasn’t strong enough to win and defeat others. Both the poems thematically are same; they describe human failures, disappointments and disapproval of everything. Every human being goes through these situations, suicide is a feeling that every human goes through on various occasions in life. In terms of representation, these poems contradict with each other, in Harjo’s poem there is a representation of suicidal feelings of a mother and in Mirikitani’s poem, there is a representation of a daughter’s suicidal feelings. In Harjo’s poem the woman cries over loss of her physical beauty, the way her physical structure is described and describing her as the mother of three suggests that she is disappointed because she has lost her physical beauty and she thinks that she has lost every reason to live, whereas in Mirikitani’s poem the girl is disappointed by the fact that she couldn’t prove her worth to her parents and that she has disappointed them by not proving herself to them. Thus, to conclude, it can be said that both the poems are similar on thematic

Violated Human Rights Essay Example for Free

Violated Human Rights Essay On Oct 10, 2012 a womans rights were violated when an inmate (female) gave birth to her first child. No doctors were present during labor nor during the actual delivery. Said inmate, Julie Bilotta, had reported that the guards at her prison had heard her cries of pain during labour and had chosen to ignore it. If that wasn’t bad enough, the guards even got irritated of her constant yelling and had her transferred to a new cell. Julie eventually gave birth 4 hours after the transfer. Luckily, the baby was born and is healthy. My personal view on this issue is that this is an incident that should have never happened. I think that we are a civilized enough society to realize that these inmates are still people, they are just people who have made mistakes. While paying for it, should they be treated like they are not even humane enough to have a proper health care when in need? Not only that, but because of this epidemic a child’s, or mother’s, life could have been taken away. With almost no help at all, this woman gave birth, endangering both her child and her self. The report even stated that the baby’s birth was something called a â€Å"breech birth† ( that’s when the baby enters the birth canal either buttocks or feet first rather than the head.) something like this is extremely serious during birth because it can sometimes lead to the baby getting caught and choking to death. Also, the woman giving birth can possibly bleed to death. That is why there is usually a medical procedure called a â€Å"c-section† for the safety of both mother and child. So far, the major rights that I see violated are. 1) Article 3: Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person. An innocent child, who hasn’t even been born long enough to even make mistakes, has had it’s life at risk. It has the right to live, and that prison took away it’s right by refusing to give the mother proper medical care. What if that baby really had died for something that could have been easily avoided? 2) Article 25. (1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control. This article states that everyone has the right to proper health care. Although, in all fairness, the prison guards did have Julie checked out by nurses, the reason why she didn’t receive proper medical attention is due to the fact that they thought it was a false labour. But even at that, they should have made sure that it was indeed false labour by getting a proper checkup by a doctor. At least that’s what standard procedure states, and according to article 25: Everyone has the right to standard living adequate including things like health care. I do believe that something like this will not happen ever again since it caused such an uprising by a group of womens rights activists. Along with all the press the incident got when it first occurred, it seems that everyone has the same thoughts on this matter and that, hopefully, this is the last time that this is to ever happen. However, if people still don’t get the message after this incident, I strongly believe that there should be some prison rule stating that when an inmate is pregnant the baby, and mother’s, well being become top priority and treat the birth the same as if the mother weren’t a prisoner.

All About Apples :: Essays Papers

All About Apples History The history of apples stretches back to the days of Adam and Eve, when it is believed to have been the â€Å"forbidden fruit† described in the Bible. Despite this long standing history, apples did not always grow naturally in New England. While the first apples are thought to have grown on the lower slopes of Tian Shan, a mountain range separating Kazakhstan and Krygystan, they also grew wild in Central and Southwest Asia, China, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Greece. Through conquest and exploration, apples were spread when Romans conquered England and when Spaniards brought them to Mexico and South America. It wasn’t until the mid 1600’s that the Pilgrims cultivated them in Massachusetts. It is believed that John Endecott, an early governor, was the first to bring an apple tree to North America, and the first orchard was planted on Beacon Hill by a clergyman named William Blaxton. It is Blaxton who is credited for growing the first named apple, the Yellow Sweeting. Once apples were established in New England, they played an active role in everyday life. As a fruit which was easily stored through the winter, as well as being very beneficial to settlers’ health, apples were a main staple in early settlers’ diets. Despite the fact that apples were not initially from North America, and have been growing disease-free for centuries in their native habitats, the early settlers found that the long, hot summers and cold w inters of New England grew apples unlike anywhere else in the world. New England apples are known not only for their unique blend of tart and sweet flavors, but also for their size and freshness. Apples can be grown farther North than any other tree fruit. The reason for this is that the tree blooms in late spring when it is unlikely that the blossoms will be harmed by frost. While France harvests more apples than America, the yearly U.S. harvest is around one hundred and fifty million bushels, with the largest apple-growing state being Washington. Growing Techniques:Winter A seed from an apple will generally grow if it’s planted under satisfactory conditions, however, the apples will be smaller and poorer than the apple from which the seed was taken. For this reason, apple trees should be planted from buds cut from a healthy tree. This type of apple planting is called grafting.

Competitive Advantage and Disadvantage Between Minorities and Women in the Workforce

â€Å"It’s a small world. † How many times do we hear this in our everyday life? The internet, mass media, telecommunications, and mass transportation have all contributed to the shrinking of the international market. As companies become more and more diverse, it’s becoming more and more important for the employees to understand and manage it. For my research paper, I’ve decided to find out the competitive advantage and disadvantage between minorities and women in the workplace.Diversity in the workplace is a topic that many industries and organizations spend an abundant amount of time and training on in order to ensure its presence. Today’s workplace is more diverse than it has ever been in the history of America. 1 out of 4 Americans belong to a minority or is foreign-born. Women are making up less than half of the work force. Whether you are a business owner, executives, salesperson, or customers, your success will increasingly depend on your abi lity to function in a culturally diverse marketplace. Women, people of color, and immigrants will soon hold almost ? of all jobs in this country. In order to effectively manage diversity and recognize it as a source of strength instead of conflict, we will need to be educated and reprogrammed to accept and embrace diversity. In the world today, it is a face that a lot of people believe that racism is no longer exists. Little do they know, as of 2010, the National Organization of Women believes that the U. S. still needs an affirmative action plan. African American women earned 63 cents to a dollar for the jobs that men do, and Hispanic women earn 57 cents to the dollar and Blacks have twice the unemployment rates of whites.Minority and immigrant groups are often disadvantaged in gaining access to jobs for which they are educationally qualified and earn less than their white counterparts. Descriptive results showed greater overall underemployment among females than males. Blacks and H ispanics had higher unemployment and working poverty rates compared to non-Hispanic whites and Asians, with job mismatch highest among Asians. Immigrant underemployment was greater than that of the native-born Americans. Asians posted the largest disparity in immigrant versus native-born underemployment, and blacks had the smallest. The double disadvantage hypothesis of minority group and immigrant status is accepted only for Asian men and women with jobs mismatched to their skills and for Asian women, who are most likely to be unemployed or be among the working poor. Asian immigrants’ women have the characteristics to stay at home, cleaning house, shy, and less aggressive, which transform to have less attached to the workforce. Researchers have shown great interest in the study of gender and race effects on promotions outcomes. The evidence suggests that women are disadvantaged such that they are less likely to be promoted than their equal qualified male counterparts. Lacks of advancement opportunities is major contributors to voluntary quit decisions by employees that fitted the job well and contribute to the company they belong. Employment decisions should be based on skills and ability, allowing all employees to put their talents to good use and work together to get the best possible outcome. America is not the only place in the world that’s facing the challenge of workplace discrimination.Within the UK, construction has an unenviable status as being the industry with the lowest representation of women and ethnic minority employees. The construction workplace presents a challenging and hostile environment for non-traditional workers, and women and ethnic minority employees face both similar and different challenges and attitudinal barriers. Discriminatory behavior perform by the dominant white male workforce is unbearable, as are informal recruitment practices, exclusive networks and a competitive culture. As the turn of the new millennium, the proportion of minority members living n poverty, attending poorly funded schools, or experiencing other forms of disadvantage far exceed the proportion of whites under these conditions. It was found that the minority residents of communities with large minority populations were in worse socioeconomic conditions than the minority residents of predominately white communities. Furthermore it was found that as minority concentration increased, white residents tended to do better. In addition, the extent of racial inequality between minority and white residents was greater in communities with larger minority populations. The improvement of education and training to minority residents of racially concentrated communities will be very beneficial, not only to the people itself, also think of it as a better country as a whole. There is little question that the improvement of educational levels and employment skills of minority residents communities will pay dividends in the near future. The growing markets of Latin America, Asia, and Central and Eastern Europe are now playing an ever more important role in global buying, selling and manufacturing.Diversity within a company can help the firm better understand the culture, customs, and the way of doing business internationally. Customers also prefer to do business with a workforce that which they can identify, and that have a strong commitment to their community. There are many advantages to having a work environment that is diverse. A company that is prepared for changes in demographics is prepared for the market changes as well as the changes in the pool of applicants. Having a diverse workplace creates an increase in attracting and retaining the most qualified candidates.Diversity programs within corporations improve corporate culture, help in recruitment, and help to maintain better client relations. In conclusion diversity in workforce is growing in all countries, specially America, Canada, and Europe. With having m ore diverse work environment, organization can produce better performance. It is important for the companies to know diversity and how to handle the issues relating to it. Also the need of the diverse workforce is getting more not only because there are different people but also because they can produce better results with having different types of people working.Leaders in the organizations must learn diversity and how to manage it effectively. One of the reasons, aside that my family is back in Hong Kong, that I will end up going back to Hong Kong as soon as I graduate college is because as much as I don’t want to say it, I can feel discrimination everyday in my life. As little as just playing basketball on a nice day, someone around you will always have the stereotype about how you look and what to expect. We can arguably say that America is the â€Å"melting pot† of the world, but racism, in my book, will never escape in the use of our everyday life.

Information System and Modern Business

Information System and Modern Business Many enterprises have adopted information systems and business modelling tools to manage their operations. For instance, the Enterprise Resource Planning System (ERP) is currently used to address business challenges such as linking strategic objectives of the organization and performance (Serova, 2009, p. 269). The Enterprise Resource Planning consists of unique applications, languages and software which are used to generate diagrams and models. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Information System and Modern Business specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The resultant diagrams and models are very useful in a number of ways. For example, they depict staff organization and business processes. In addition, they recommend critical modifications that must be implemented to improve business performance (Setlak Markov, 2010, p.149). Therefore, many enterprises have adopted computer modelling system and modern information technol ogies as part of their decision-making processes. This is based on the fact that these tools enable managers to make strategic decisions. What is more, computer modelling systems and IT allow managers to utilize several tools such as synchronized video animation and object-based programming in their strategic decision-making process (Setlak Markov, 2010, p. 149). Business organizations also use computer modelling to understand intricate nonlinear business relations (i.e. Describing behaviours of economic agents in different periods and predicting future flows of events). Thus, computer modelling and IT help managers to derive qualitative and quantitative data from current models. Managers use qualitative data to understand the unique characteristics of a multifaceted system, integrity, sustainability, and development patterns within their organizations and targeted markets (Setlak Markov, 2010, p. 150). Previously, business organizations used IT applications to reduce cost of pr oduction (i.e. Labour costs). For instance, IT was used to enhance organizational communication, computerize business transactions (i.e. Payments) and automate information recovery and storage. Thus, IT enabled companies to reduce the number of accountants and clerks hired to carry out these functions. Currently, many organizations are using IT to pursue other strategic objectives, such as improving customer services and enhancing marketing strategies (Hitt, 1999, p. 6; Setlak Markov, 2010, p. 150).Advertising Looking for essay on computer science? These systems can automatically detect and solve problems that occur during the production process. Business Intelligence (BI) applications are also regularly used by organizations to improve efficiency and augment the decision making process. In other words, Business Intelligence systems enable the management to have a comprehensive picture of the organization. In addition, BI applications address the following questions: What is the current situation of the organization? What factors contributed to the current situation? What are the potential solutions to the current situation? Thus, BI systems can help managers to find practical solutions to these questions and improve performance (Stasienko, 2010, p. 143). In addition, Business Intelligence applications are useful tools because they provide crucial and steadfast data required for decision making process. What is more, strategic and operational decisions are easier to make when an organization adopts Business Intelligence systems. This is due to the fact that such systems allow the manager to access vital data on time. What is more, BI technologies facilitate information sharing among staff, boost collaboration within the organization and augment pr ofit margins. Organizational success is subject to a number of factors. These include: forecasting, budgeting, and planning. It has been established that planning is the most complex process in any business organization because it entails all components that are being transformed. What is more, business processes require considerable time to develop a business model and prepare budgets. Thus, Business Intelligence technology has a number of applications that can automatically carry out these functions (Stasienko, 2010, p. 145). Business Intelligence systems also improve business processes especially during critical periods. They also help the organization to reduce strategic and operational risks at the management level. The implementation of BI applications can therefore enable an organization to set up additional automated systems in those areas where the employees’ input is considered significant. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Information Syst em and Modern Business specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It deserves merit to note that strategic and operational risks are mainly attributed to the human factor. Therefore, eradicating the human factor in the production process can dramatically reduce the operational risks and the resultant costs. It is against this backdrop that many enterprises have implemented Business Intelligence systems to automate the decision making process within the organization (Stasienko, 2010, p. 146). BI applications also enable an enterprise to gain a competitive edge in the market since managers can use these applications to make accurate and prompt decisions. In addition, some of the solutions stemming from BI systems can also augment the functionality of the Enterprise Resource Planning System (ERP) within the organization. What is more, Business Intelligence technologies employ various tools that an enterprise can use for data mining. These tools include neural networks, decision tree analysis and regression analysis (Serova, 2009, p. 269). In conclusion, many business organizations are now using IT and computer applications to accomplish their strategic goals. Therefore, it seems that the successful implementation of computer applications and information systems will define organizational performance and success in the near future. References Hitt, LM.
